Where is Bigton?

map of Shetland

Bigton is a picturesque village sited on the west coast of the south end of mainland Shetland. It is approximately 18 miles from the capital town of Lerwick and has the finest sand tombolo in the whole of the UK. The tombolo links the mainland to St Ninians Isle, which boasts treasure, a ruined chapel, an ancient broch site and many rare and beautiful birds and flowers. Our first yoal Ringansay is named after the old Norse for 'St Ninian' and on March 12th 2010, St. Ninian's Isle sand became the site for the burning of the galley in the first ever South Mainland Up Helly Aa.
